Teenage Dream: The Complete Confection is a reissue of Katy Perry's third studio album Teenage Dream. It was released on March 23, 2012 by Capitol Records, nearly two years after the original album. Perry collaborated with producers including Tricky Stewart to refine leftover material from the recording sessions at Playback Recording Studio for Teenage Dream. The album features three bonus tracks, two of which were actual outtakes from the Teenage Dream era, and one brand new song created during the reissue's development. The album includes official remixes released during the Teenage Dream singles-run; the acoustic version of "The One That Got Away", the Missy Elliott remix of "Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.)", the Kanye West remix of "E.T.", as well as a official mash-up of all six singles from Teenage Dream entitled the "Tommie Sunshine's Megasix Smash-Up". The Japan release omits the Missy Elliott remix and the "Megasix Smash-Up".

Upon its release, the re-release was met with generally mixed reviews from music critics, who were ambivalent towards the new songs' production and questioned the decision to reissue Teenage Dream. The reissue boosted sales of the original album, reaching number seven on the U.S. Billboard 200 and at number six on the UK Albums Chart. In several international territories, the album charted as an independent release, and has sold one million copies globally.

Two singles were released from the reissue. The lead single "Part of Me" debuted at number one on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100, and was eventually certified double-platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), while the second single "Wide Awake" peaked at number two in the country. The record was further promoted with live performances during the 54th Annual Grammy Awards and the 2012 Billboard Music Awards. The reissue was promoted through the feature film Katy Perry: Part of Me, which followed Perry during her California Dreams Tour. "Wide Awake" served as the official single of the film.

Background

A re-release was rumored for the album and was to be released sometime in 2011. Speculations for the re-release began when a fan messaged one of Katy Perry's producers asking about the release of the song "Dressing Up". The producer replied saying the song will be included in a re-issue of the album.

In October 2010, Rihanna stated that she and Katy have been talking a lot about possibly working together, she stated: "We want to get in the studio and make something......maybe for her re-release. But we want to do something together for sure". In November 2010, Rihanna shed some further light on the duet, stating: "[Katy] sent me a song a while ago and she wanted me to be a part of it. I was like, 'Hell, yeah, of course'. She's my girl and the song is amazing. We'll be recording that together pretty soon".

In March 2011, Dr. Luke’s representative confirmed that Luke was finishing up a new single with Perry, he stated: "They just put the finishing touches on Katy’s newest [upcoming] single, which they created together in February 2011. They had a great time, and the single is amazing. He wishes Katy nothing but continued success and looks forward to working with her again soon”. Also in March 2011, when asked by More Magazine whether she would record a feline-inspired song, Perry replied: "I have a lot of those on the album already. I do have a song coming out in a few months that has a couple of cat references, but I think that's a little too saucy to talk about. I like to leave things a mystery".

In October 2011, Tricky Stewart told MTV that he is back in the studio with Perry working on leftovers from their Teenage Dream sessions. He stated: "Katy and I went into [the studio] just to address some issues with [the] records that we had done in the past that didn't end up going on Teenage Dream, so we are in the process of just listening and freshening up things and getting ready for something special she has going on", hinting that Teenage Dream would have a re-release. Stewart also added: "We always knew that the records we created were special [and] at the time it was more contractual obligation [that they did not make the album], I can only have so many songs produced by me on the album, and she honestly didn't need any more records, as you can tell by the success of this album, the songs have been flawless." Stewart said that one of the songs is titled "Dressin' Up", he said: "This song is really special. It's called 'Dressing Up,' so it's going to be a big record, I think, it definitely fits. It's right there in what her sensibilities are as a musician and a songwriter. She doesn't change much. She has a very keen musical taste. It'll be really good".

In December 2011, German Amazon sites revealed a 2012 re-issue is on it's way. It will include all the re-released remixes of singles from the album era. In January 2012, it was revealed by Amazon and Best Buy that Teenage Dream will be re-released on March 13, 2012 under the title "Teenage Dream: The Complete Confection". It was later removed from both sites and put up again with a new release date; March 27, 2012. It was made available for pre-order on the US iTunes store on March 12, 2012. Regarding the reasoning for re-releasing the album Perry stated in a press-release:

In February 2012, the cover art and details about Teenage Dream: The Complete Confection were revealed. It will contain the original album, plus 3 single remixes of "E.T." featuring American rapper Kanye West, "Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.)" featuring also rapper Missy Elliott, and the acoustic version of "The One That Got Away". The package will also contain three new songs that didn't make the original cut of Teenage Dream, plus a megamix of the six singles, made by Tommie Sunshine. The only two songs from the Teenage Dream-era that were left out the re-release were "Milk Milk Lemonade" and the B.o.B. remix of "The One That Got Away".

Perry told MTV.com in Los Angeles for details onto why she's releasing the album, "With Teenage Dream, the reasons why I wanted to put out this special edition, Complete Confection, is two major reasons for me: One, I'm doing it mostly for the hard-core fans because they always love all the extras, the second reason I wanted to do it is because it's my one last push, to push that person that is on the precipice of becoming a fan. They're thinking to themselves, 'I bought four or five singles, maybe I should actually complete my album and now I should really complete my album because I'm gonna get 19 songs for a really great price.' I think it's like a bargain and I'm doing it for my fans." She added that doesn't consider the re-release as a whole new album, "I'm really excited and I'm not putting it out there as, like, another album — you know how you find different artists do their version, like eight songs or something. I'm am ready to make a new record, and I will close the book on Teenage Dream soon, but [Complete Confection] just felt really organic."

Upon its release, Teenage Dream: The Complete Confection received generally mixed reviews from music critics. Melissa Maerz of Entertainment Weekly opined that the newly recorded material "runs stale", but stated that the disc contained "some delectable musical snacks" including "Dressin' Up" and the acoustic version of "The One That Got Away". Writing for PopMatters, Jesse Fox felt that the record is "obviously not perfect", but suggested that its enjoyable nature helped Perry "[pull] it off like a bright, flamboyant, short-lived, explosive, nearly abrasive, gasps-inspiring firework." A writer for Blogcritics appreciated The Complete Confection's musical diversity, and thought that the lyrical content made the album a "journey in love, life and everything in between." |-|Performance=

Chart performance

In the United States, Teenage Dream: The Complete Confection boosted sales of the original Teenage Dream, which consequently re-entered the top-ten of the Billboard 200 at number seven with first-week sales of 33,000 copies. This resulted in a 190%-increase from the previous tracking week, in which the original record stood at number 31. A similar situation occurred on the UK Albums Chart, where The Complete Confection helped Teenage Dream rise from number 34 to number six after the former was released. The Complete Confection peaked at number two on the Official New Zealand Music Chart, aided by the combined sales of the two versions.

Elsewhere, The Complete Confection performed moderately as an independently charting release. In Europe, the record respectively peaked at numbers 14 and 29 on the Belgian Flanders and Wallonia charts, both managed by Ultratop. It also reached number four on the French Albums Chart and number 18 on The Official Finnish Charts. The project was less successful on the Dutch MegaCharts and the Swedish Sverigetopplistan, where it respectively peaked at numbers 44 and 48. In Oceania, it peaked at number five on the Australian ARIA Charts. According to the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI), the album has sold over 1 million copies worldwide as of 2013.

Singles

• "Part of Me", which was produced by Lukasz Gottwald and Max Martin, was released as the lead (seventh overall) single from the re-release by Capitol Records. It was released for digital download and radio airplay on February 13, 2012. It was met with generally favorable reviews from music critics, and became the twentieth song in the history of Billboard to debut at number one on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100, and was also certified double-platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) for exceeding sales of two million copies. The track also peaked at number one in New Zealand, and performed moderately in other international territories. The track was nominated for the Grammy Award for Best Pop Solo Performance at the 2013 ceremony, but lost to "Set Fire to the Rain" by Adele.

• "Wide Awake" was released as the final single from the Teenage Dream era on May 22, 2012, and was serviced to mainstream radio in late May 2012. It peaked at number 2 on the Billboard Hot 100, becoming Perry's 8th top three hit in a row. "Wide Awake" was used to promote her concert-movie Katy Perry: Part of Me. A music video for the song was released on June 18, 2012. The song has sold 3,300,000 copies in the Unite States as of January 2015.
