Katy Hudson is the debut studio album released by Katy Perry, who was at that time performing under her birth name, Katy Hudson. It was released on February 8, 2001 to Christian music retailers. This would be her only gospel album before she made the switch to mainstream pop music. Hudson is credited as an author of four of the songs on the album, while is credited as a co-author on the remaining six. "Trust in Me" was the lead single, followed by "Search Me".

On June 1, 2012 the album was re-released on iTunes under the name Katy Hudson and the label R-records.

Background and production

Prior to the release of the album, Katy Hudson (now better known as Katy Perry) had signed to an independent Christian record label called Red Hill Records. After the releases, Perry had set up her website, with the same name talking about her album and promoting her album in her way. She did a few interviews and opened for artists like Jennifer Knapp, who plays as a major influence on the album along with Fiona Apple and Queen. Most of the music genres are Christian music, with pop rock, rock and some aggressive tunes, which Hudson pointed that "Piercing" was one of them. Production and distribution of the album ceased after Red Hill Records folded at the end of 2001. Copies of the CD, which are very rare, are sold at eBay.

Critical reception

The album received a favorable review from Russ Breimeier of Christianity Today, who applauded her voice and songwriting and called her "a remarkable young talent emerging, a gifted songwriter in her own right who will almost certainly go far in this business".

Stephen Thomas Erlewine from Allmusic gave it a favorable review, giving it three stars. He complimented her songwriting, mostly comparing it to Alanis Morissette. He also said " Katy Hudson is only instructive as the first act in a prefab pop star's career, to show that she has talent but that she was mismarketed.

Singles

Trust in me
