Background

In March 7, 2012, she announced via Twitter that she and Paramount Pictures will release a part-biopic, part-concert film entitled Katy Perry: Part of Me, which will be released summer of 2012. She tweeted: "FINALLY, my MOVIE is coming out with Paramount this summer! It's called "KATY PERRY: PART OF ME" Presented In 3D! KATYCATS-LETS TREND #KP3D".[1]

Perry told MTV News that the film was the closing to the Teenage Dream era, and explained what to expect, stating "It's closing the chapter on Teenage Dream, but it's giving you such an inside perspective." and that "You're going to see it from my best friend/buddy perspective, you're going to see exactly what I mean and feel and think about everything." Perry stated that she went through a big professional and personal life-changing journey which she wants to show her fans. She commented on the California Dreams Tour saying "That tour was so life-changing to me. I learned so much, I went through so much along the way." She went on to say "I'm not necessarily trying to prove anything to anyone, but not only will people really hands-down know me after they see this film, but you'll see me as the Dorothy wearing the red ruby slipper and at the end of it all I'm the [Wizard of] Oz as well."

She said "Listen, I've [worked on] most of this film for a very long time and the word 'cheap' was not in the vocabulary," she said. "But, hello, it's 3D. You're going to get hit with a lot of shit." Two golden tickets to the movie's premiere were placed in random physical copies of Teenage Dream: The Complete Confection (US and Canada only).

On March 31, 2012 the official trailer premiered the commercial break following Katy Perry's performance for the 2012 Kid's Choice Awards on Nickelodeon. She announced the same day via Twitter that the film would be released during the weekend of July 4. She tweeted: "Now.....are you READY to go see MY film PART OF ME in 3D JULY 4th WEEKEND?!" A trailer of the film was released on April 02, 2012 on iTunes Store worldwide. According to Perry on Teen Vogue, Perry said that the reason she wanted to create the movie was that she was inspired by the film Madonna: Truth or Dare (1991). She said "I wanted to do that too, to capture a snapshot of who I am now so that I can remind myself what I've lost if I ever do become totally jaded."

Katy teamed up with Pepsi to promote the film. The partnership includes co-branded television and radio spots, digital advertising and retail displays. P. Simon Lowden, the Chief Marketing Officer for Pepsi Co. said "Pepsi is a brand at the forefront of pop culture and this partnership with Katy's film will deliver fans an exclusive one-of-a-kind experience at one of the biggest movie events of the Summer, starring one of the one today's hottest musical artists. This is one major way Pepsi will invite and inspire our fans to Live for Now." All elements of the campaign will feature Pepsi's new global tag line, "Live For Now." The Pepsi effort will offer consumers the chance to win trips to attend the world premiere of the film in Los Angeles, which will include a live performance by Perry.
