"Bon Appétit" is a song by Katy Perry from her fifth studio album, Witness. The song features rap group, Migos and was released on April 28, 2017 as the album's official second single. A solo version featuring a new bridge was also serviced to radio. Perry said the song represents sexual liberation.
Background and release[]
In November 2016 Perry announced the song was going to be released On Christmas Eve. 2016 as promotional single Estonian The song was confirmed by Perry at the 59th Annual Grammy Awards during an interview on the red carpet with Ryan Seacrest. "There’s going to be all kinds of stuff on [the album] and don’t worry you’re going to have some of that good, old Katy Perry fluffy stuff that you love so much. I have one song called ‘Bon Appétit’ that I love."[1] Perry teased the track on her Instagram story on March 17, 2017.
On April 24, 2017 Perry sent out a newsletter which featured a recipe for the "World's Best Cherry Pie". The final step is a nod to the song, saying "Bon Appétit, Baby".[2] She later tweeted the recipe along with an image of cherry apple pie.[3] On April 26, 2017, Perry sent fans who baked Cherry Pies a black-colored menu, titled "TÉMOIN" which translates from French to "Witness". This is a nod to the name of her 2017 album, Witness. The same day Perry unveiled the official single artwork tweeting "Compliments to the chef."[4]
During a session on Instagram live Perry revealed her inspiration behind the song. After the writing sessions for the album, Perry's friend Lauren would say "Bon appétit b***h". Perry then thought to herself that she wanted to write a song called "Bon Appétit" for the album. To promote the song on the day of its release, Perry went to Times Square in a food truck to hand out cherry pies to fans. Perry also teamed up with Tasty on Facebook to demonstrate a cherry pie recipe. She performed the song live for the first time during the Met Gala 2017, where she was accompanied by Migos.
Music video[]
Dent De Cuir directed the song's music video, which was released on May 12, 2017 and features Chef Roy Choi. It first shows Perry wrapped in plastic before chefs cut the wrapping open and "start kneading her like dough" before she is boiled in a pot with carrots while singing her lyrics and Choi serves her as a meal. Migos watches and raps their verses as she then dances on a pole. Perry then is served a pie containing dismembered body parts.
The video has the fastest-growing views in 24 hours with over 14 million views, just beating out Adele's "Hello" music video from 2015.
